Starting on September 11th, 2012, al-Qa'ida carried out a series of terrorist attacks on the U.S. Consulate and CIA Annex in Benghazi, Libya, killing four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens. With over 150 attackers at the Consulate alone, the attack was the largest terrorist attack on a U.S. diplomatic mission in history. And yet, the case remained unsolved. The terrorists were never brought to justice because they had not been identified until now.
Two former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Officers involved in the Libyan crisis before, during, and after the attacks decided they would not allow an al-Qa'ida terrorist attack to become a cold case. Inside these pages, you will find a first-hand account of the attacks showcasing the terrorists involved. For the first time, they open their files into a self-funded, open-source investigation into the perpetrators. Drawing on their extensive experience and knowledge of the region, to offer a unique and valuable perspective on the events.
This important and timely book provides crucial insights into a tragedy as the CIA Officers share their findings with the reader. The hope is to honor the memory of those killed by exposing and bringing justice to the real enemies of the United States.

The Career Path of One Former CIA Targeting Analyst
For this episode of the Security Clearance Careers podcast, we speak with Sarah Adams, a targeting officer and global threat advisor with extensive domestic and international experience. From 2015 – 2017 she served on the U.S. House of Representatives Select Committee on Benghazi, and prior to the committee, was a lead Targeting Analyst at the CIA. She joined the Agency in 2006 to identify and assess global terrorist threats aimed at the U.S., its interests, and its allies.
CAREER PATH TO THE CIA
More recently, she has worked in a number of other roles to try to answer complex national security challenges, and coauthored Benghazi: Know Thy Enemy: A Cold Case Investigation. Her journey can lend insight to younger professionals who may be interested in a career at the CIA.
She didn’t always envision herself at the CIA and found the analysis world in 2006. Adams offers advice to our younger generation about getting a job with the intelligence community. It wasn’t until grad school that Adams started learning about national security topics and consequently intelligence community careers.
Adams actually pivoted careers from some of the internships she worked in during college. One thing to note is that mentors played an important role in that transition – and having many mentors across multiple industries helps to develop your network.
Three tips to getting a career at the CIA
- Use internships to meet your three-year probation period (i.e., three summer internships can mean you come into the agency at a more senior level).
- Don’t box yourself in to security clearance careers. There are many internships with open source that may better suit you now to get to that security clearance later.
- Work on the issues that you’re really interested in, perhaps with think tanks or firms, and you will eventually get yourself into the intelligence community to do great work.

Inside Al-Qaeda: Know Thy Enemy and the Homeland Plot
This course offers a comprehensive analysis of Al-Qaeda’s operations, ideology, and its evolving threat to Western interests. We begin with a brief case study of the 2012 Benghazi attacks investigation, setting the stage to explore the broader global terrorism landscape and the rise of Islamist terrorism over the past five decades. From there, we delve into the origins of Al-Qaeda, its current organizational structure, and its long-term objectives, which include the establishment of an Islamic Caliphate and the formation of an Islamic Army composed of both Sunni and Shia terrorist factions.
The course then shifts focus to Al-Qaeda’s ongoing plotting against the U.S. homeland, specifically examining their evolving tactics and innovations in terrorism, including a deep dive into aviation threats and the advancement of the "invisible bomb." Through this lens, we trace the evolution of their plotting against the West, understanding how these threats have adapted to security measures over time.
By the end of the course, participants will have a clearer understanding of the current and future threat landscape posed by Al-Qaeda and its affiliates. They will also explore strategic recommendations to counter and mitigate this evolving risk, with an emphasis on proactive and reactive measures to safeguard national security.
